These panels appeared in remarkably good condition since the days when Charles Darwin lived here at Down House and walked through this doorway. Multiple breaks in the side panel, side fanlights and central fanlight, however, meant that the top panels needed to be removed. The leadwork in the panels was still amazingly robust and the panels did not require rebuilding but only the cracked pieces replacing. Fortunately an exact match of the pale tint of hand made glass was found and the panels returned good as new. Down House is a short drive out from London. It is owned by English Heritage and has a fascinating Darwin museum and educational centre set in beautiful grounds with great tea room! You can find Down House here.
